Most probably a trial run to see how far the issue can be pushed. The penalties are real though
According to 18 USCA 2339A fine and a jail term not exceeding 15 years.
According to 18 USCA 2339B fine and a jail term not exceeding 15 years.
According to 18 USCA 982 any real or personal property involved is forfeit.
According to 18 USCA 1957 (Racketeering) fine and jail term of 10 years.
Of course you have to be a U.S. citizen to be eligible for the criminal penalties. This would seem to help the case for nationality correction.
