Given aaron2100's circumstances, I believe the more prudent route is to follow the options you listed at the bottom of your post or follow the method in the link provided by weis (why take a chance on the ticket being entered in the system?).
I am speculating, but it seems the officer intentionally gave you an opportunity to prevail in this matter.
