Now you are getting into some interesting speculation. I have read some of the works of Zacharia Sitchin on the Nephilem (aka the Anunnuki). These beings proclaimed themselves gods and created the e-hum (human) through bio-engineering.

There is another interesting website called ascendpress.org that espouses the same thing with a different outlook concerning the whole matter. Really interesting stuff. Religion may be the worship of different Nephilem. The gods of the different ancient cultures i.e. Greece, Rome, Babylon, Egypt, Sumer were the same set of gods
