My daughter and I went through this (there's a thread somewhere!) but there was a magistrate present and he decided she was pleading not guilty and set a trial date and then told her she would be notified (she wasn't). Our query as to "does this court proceed on the presumption of innocence?" was answered with, "You plead not guilty!" We replied, "Are you asking me to plead to an offence about which I have no information?" "That's why you plead not guilty!' (implied -- you dunce!") It was a circle jerk -- "Does this court proceed .. " around and around and around. Stupid. But the magistrate finally jumped up out of his chair and pulled off his robe on his way out, then turned and said, "And I suppose you object to the yellow fringe on the flag too!!" (Not a question, mind you.) I answered, "Do you think we should?" Like he didn't know what was going on.
