I haven't used toothpaste for about 15 years. The only cavities I have are from 20 years ago. I use baking soda and peroxide only. Sometimes with each other but mostly I use the baking soda by itself. All I do is wet the toothbrush with water and touch the brush on the baking soda to pick some up.
Sugar causes cavities because the bacteria that live in your mouth consume the sugar too. They produce an acidic by-product though. The acidic environment softens the the tooth enamel allowing other micro organisms to break it down causing the cavity.
Baking soda is a water softener (aids cleaning) and is alkaline which neutralizes acids. Peroxide is a natural whitener and kills bacteria.
