stopgap
Possibly what George Walker is not telling anybody is that it was stupid to build New Orleans below sea level. At least that is what the natives were telling people 300 years ago (I hear).
The purpose of the sandbags may just be to keep the polluted water from contaminating biosystems in the Gulf of Mexico. There may be no immediate plans to pump out the water over the city. It could take several months to devise a processing plant for that. Everything below sea level is wrecked anyway.
Building New Orleans was stupid. Rebuilding a city below sea level is insane. I know it sounds cold and that New Orleans was a unique and cultural pearl of beauty. But physics is physics. The uphill battle of keeping New Orleans dry has failed and BUSH's promise to rebuild her may very well be an empty promise to save face. I think my opinion is quite pragmatic and would like to think BUSH is realistic the same way. But I would not put it past him to lie; just like the WTC was to be rebuilt or replaced by an even better memorial to 911.
Regards,
David Merrill.
