MY OPINION:
Heard a few years ago of a guy in Missouri who had a pasture full of sassafras trees he needed to get rid of. Set up a stock tank with a fire pit underneath, made a rack to steam the wood over the tank and a hood to collect the steam with a condenser. He was able to collect several quarts of sassafras essential oil a day which he sold. After the wood dried he used the wood to stoke the fire.
I doubt if he spent more than $100 in the whole operation.
