First, thanks everyone. This is an approach I'd never considered--or heard mentioned anywhere else--until I started reading the forums here.& So any "thanks" due are from me to all y'all. (gotta love that Southernese)
And, yes. We'd contacted both CC companies first.
Bank of America (me) just sends "Oh, let us help you if you're having problems...etc. etc." AND keeps sending regular statements.
Direct Merchants Bank (Lisa) sent her a "your account is administered in accord with the laws of blah blah and is valid and the balance remains outstanding."&
(I like the next part):
"Accordingly, we must deny your request to waive all claims, and we will not report to the cra's that your account is 'paid as agreed' at this time."& They did add, of course, "this is an attempt to collect a debt..."&
Just waiting to see who does what next....
