These mini-recorders are often referred to as "Policemen's Bibles" as they always "carry the truth." lol
In my early twenties, I had an RCA under dash cassette recorder that I had mounted, and locked up, inside the glovebox of my auto. I placed the microphone in the interior light in the ceiling and ran the wires under the ceiling liner, with discreet switches mounted on the console, so I could turn it on and off at will. It was a lot of fun !
Today, I have 2 voice activated tape recorders, which are about the size of a cigarette pack. I keep one in the car, and one on me at all times.
It has always been my understanding, that
unattended video tape (without audio) is allowed, but
unattended audio is not.
Attended audio / visual taping is allowed
if you are a party to the conversation / taping. (case cites welcome).
I have used these recordings in court on two occasions, once in traffic court, and once in family court to prove abuse / damage. In both instances, I recieved no objections from opposing counsel or the judge.
Cassette type models are generally available at Radio Shack for $60 ($40 on sale) and the digital models start at around $90. A very wise investment indeed !
