There is an obsessive stage of infancy wherein there is a proclivity (or, for some, a neccesity) for infants to "artistically," or "expressively," apply to the surfaces within their reach, their own fecal matter, as if they were "finger-painting," so to speak.
The "pirates" to whom you currently attempt to address have likely not developmentally, cognitively, or intellectually progressed beyond this particular obsessive infantile developmental characteristic, and have retained the proclivity, which pathologically, by compulsion, manifests in the uncontrollable obsession with expression through metaphorically painting reachable surface areas by application of their own fecal matter, both in symbol, and metaphor.
