30 Months Fed Time for a Defective Rifle/MACHINEGUN

The charge: Transfer (not possession) of a machinegun. The guy loaned his rife to another at a range and it misfired once sending 3 rounds downrange before jamming.

Quote:
He said the Special Agent in Charge, Jody Keeku, asked for a re-test and specified that the tests use "soft primered commercial ammunition."

"FTB has no standardized testing procedures, in fact it has no written procedures at all for testing firearms," Savage said. "They had no standard to stick to, and gleefully tried again. The results this time...'a machinegun.' ATF with a self-admitted 50 percent error rate pursued an indictment and Mr. Olofson was charged with 'Unlawful transfer of a machinegun.'.

So the message here is
(1) don't loan out your rifles?
(2) don't use or possess soft primered commercial ammunition?
(3) don't let the BATFE test your arms?
(4) don't volunteer into the court system?
(5) do obtain prior certification from the manufacturer that they will indemnify you if the piece ever expends more than one round for one trigger pull?
(6) don't use a commercial range to practice?

This is ridiculous! Fight to get jury that has a conscience, and will rule accordingly.

There are 88 pages of correspondence on this case on ar15.com in their legal section.
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=6&t=507483 The guy convicted discusses the entire affair starting soon after the arm was seized in 2006. He gives scans of inventory sheets of items they seized as well as correspondence.

In their test documents the BATF first state that the rifle would fire in three round bursts and later state they ran 60 rounds through it in full auto. This is confusing because you would think it would either be set up for one or the other.
