Link Warning!!!
I have been posting this link to the Ohio Common Law Movement Conference (2004). Albeit a Wave (.wav) audio file it called up a suggestion that I could not run that video file without a codec. I fell for it and a pushy salespitch ensued on my computer.
It disabled administrative functions and replaced my desktop image (attached). It disabled my ability to Restore except through the Help "?" button. I do not have a lot of experience with this sort of thing but I fixed my computer by storing today's work on a separate drive and Restoring to yesterday.
It is the most obnoxious sales prank I have ever seen!
Admin: please investigate this link for us and if there is a trap (virus spoof) like I suspect on the Wegous site - please search and destroy the link anywhere found on Suijuris.net.

David Merrill.

Almost every commercially-available computer security software package (such as Norton's) provides automatic protection against Internet sites like that one.
They are definitely worth the 30 - 50 dollars per year.

Without Prejudice.
Spybot Search & Destroy has a resident protection for IE. --its free. It also has an immunization feature which is good IMHO to apply and update weekly.
Another is HijackThis which is a more interactive tool for removing problems or addons to IE.

Thanks everybody!
I got this from another forum...
Quote:
I've heard of this kind of thing from my brother - you can have sleeping virus' and malware lurking in your OS for weeks. Then some random download will trigger it (so you will blame it on a raw audio file).
The trick I use is this. I partition my drives and I never save anything important (for any length of time) on the C:\ - I also keep all my important video and audio and software on external drives (cause I can take them to other people's houses and more importantly I can unplug them)
I don't bother with an antivirus. But Ad-aware seems to keep the boogie man at bay.
I run a hacked version of windows called 'windows black' and I keep the disk handy. I put all of my other installation CD/DVDROMS onto an external drive as an image and use 'daemon tools' to mount the images (virtual CDs, No CDs required).
Sure you have to learn a bit about this stuff - but it's actually quite easy once you get to know your system better.
Since everything I've seen so far attacks your C:\ drive and how your windows runs - it's usually pretty easy to just keep the pictures of the baby backed up on disks or external drives.
At the first sign of trouble, lag or anything like that. I take 2-3 hours and re-install my operating system.
The beauty of the system that my brother designed(a certified microsoft professional and systems engineer... but more than anything a pot smoker lol) is that the thing that most virus/adware/malware makers consider the back bone of your system.. is completely expendable. So LET it get infected, it's so hard to tell the good from bad in virus protection, cause they make money off of it, so why not make the viruses to keep you buying upgrades to stop them. If you have it set up so that if you screw up and cripple your computer only has a 2-3 hour reload penalty...
It's Mario with infinite extra lives baby! Now... go get those koopas!
|
And considering this is all free download etc... I am glad I opened this thread.
Since I have never suffered any attack - and brought this one on by clicking for a codec I do not need - (audio, not video), I prefer being picky about what I open to slowing things down with protection.
But now that has changed and I appreciate your experience.
Thanks!
David Merrill.

You know, we could all avoid 99% of all these problems with malware, if would just switch to Linux!
I use the Ubuntu flavor whenever I do any online purchasing or paying of bills (no I don't own a bank account, I do have friends though [;)]).
Never know if something is lurking in the background on windows, recording every thing I type and phoning it home. It's such a vulnerable OS. And they drag their feet when it comes to fixing exploitable code.
Peace
