Again, I would use free stuff before anything you must pay to use. Why not try hitting a site like del.icio.us or Stumbleupon.com for tools/software that you seek?

If you really want to get serious about your operating system security, go to Linux and a "hardware" based firewall.

M$ is starting to be a real pain over licensing, patches, what software you can/can't download, as well as what video/audio you can/can't play/copy (*sarcasm* I love DRM. *sarcasm*). I refuse to update to Vista.

Me thinks nows the time to switch to a *nix platform (preference: Ubuntu for desktop. Gentoo, FreeBSD, and Solaris to learn).

So you think a Router would help? Wouldn't a router only help from someone attacking my PC? My goal was to protect my IP address and email account from the alphabet soup agencies being able to read my mail and track my on line activity. I think all a router would do is slow my connection down??

Everyone should have a router with firewall capabilities. A router will not slow your connection speed down (Its not all that fast in most cases). You may be thinking of a hub sharing bandwidth .

Sorry to break the news to you, but it is very difficult to defeat the alphabet soup boys. Let's think about this: virtually unlimited funding, lots of highly skilled people with deep expertise in their specializations, legal immunity from most statutes, and access to the patents of commercial vendors producing software applications and hardware devices.

Who is to say that there isn't backdoor coding in OSes, software, as well as hardware to allow them undetected access? On top of all that, you are using either phone, cable, or ISP companies for Internet service (which you register for). That ISP, phone, or cable company connects to some Internet backbone (which will probably have either Carnivore or Echelon listening in or sucking up traffic) not to mention the companies own security and audit measures (which govy can subpoena for or just walk in and take the records =D).

With sufficient expertise, you can give local law enforcement and even the FBI a run for its money, but not the NSA. Remember, the NSA measures its computing power in acres (and those acres have been increasing in processing density....). If you are considered a high enough valued target, they will commit the resources for your defeat.

I'm pretty much of the mind that you have to get off the net (off the grid) if you want complete privacy. You'll be able to secure yourself against most threats (and should) on the Internet. All in moderation (and expertise).

Regards,

Big Brother

speaking of Big Brother we know that the NSA uses our cell phone to listen in. That is an easy fix as (1) I just put my cell phone in a drawer or my glove box to mute the mic and (2) I never have a sensitive discussion while on the cell phone. HOWEVER,.........I would imagine that if they can do that w/ cell phones then I would bet they can do that w/ TV's and PC's too! I can't really put my TV in a drawer! And worse yet, there was a rumor floating around that PC's and TV's have a video device as well as the mic. Any truth to this and if so, can this technology be removed from your systems???

(PS maybe there should be a BIG BROTHER thread?)

That's true. I'm sure you could find white papers online about ways of gathering data from electrical devices via their electromagnetic discharges and frequencies.

That's why intelligence agencies build their buildings with heavy shielding to foil ease dropping equipment from outside.
