Debt Alert

I got a letter from DEBT ALERT from for the NYC Parking Violations Bureau for past due parking tickets......Since this is from a collection agency shall I treat this company like a debt collector?

First, find out if it is a private company or a government office.
I am not sure about how to proceed with that since I am new to this. However, my city has outsourced its violation collection to a private firm in the state. I know they are private and could fight them if I had to.

Did you receive the violation on your windshield or is this the first notice you have about a violation?

Last year, my father received demand notice for a violation that took place two years prior in an area he never visits. The license plate was also not his. I found it interesting that this was the first we have heard of such "violation". After a trip to city hall and the DMV, it was discovered that indeed the car ticketed was listed on the file as a Toyota, however the plates listed came back as a Ford on the DMV file. This alone should have made the employee at Hall cancel the ticket but I was still made to appeal the ticket to a "board". I explained the situation by mail and won.

My point is: perhaps in an effort to collect more money, cities and towns mail these "demands" out for a small sum $10-$20 I would imagine and see what happens. The fine was $20 and my father was ready to just pay it. I fought it for him anyway. Kinda like the IRS sends out thousands of "notices" telling taxpayers that they owe $xxx and must pay. They bank on the fact that most people are so afraid of the IRS, they second-guess their own accounting and figure, "well, I must be wrong here" and they just pay up. Imagine all the free money they get ontop of returns.

I think that those parking ticket schemes may be "owned" by "third party interests"? The Los Angles parking enforcement dept. I believe, is owned by some other company that has an actual contract with the city to enforce and collect parking fines. There have been some questions raised about the legality aspect of this scam. So they do use debt collectors to chase people around. One of the debt collector companies that the irs wants to employ is owned by some creep that has actually gone to jail for some improper stuff (bribes of city officals) in procuring the parking ticket collection "contract" for the city of San Antonio, TX. It is amazing the kind of slime that is swimming around in the bottom of cesspool of debt collection??!!
