I Have Some $1 Silver Certificates

and I called my coin dealer, that I have dealt with for the last ten years, and asked what these paper certificates 'would bring'.

He said that he would purchase these for $1.25 a piece maybe more. These say 'payable in silver to the bearer on demand'. So am I able to get silver on demand for these and if so, from where?

BTW, I did not ask my coin dealer any of the above except for my initial question.

You cannot swap silver certificates for silver anymore. Silver Certificates (which had been limited to the $1, $2 and $5 denominations) ceased to be issued in 1963 (officially, the 1957 series), and Congress enacted that they would no longer be redeemable in silver coin after June 24, 1968.

To a bank, a $1 silver certificate is now worth no more than a $1 FRN or 100 pennies, etc., but to a coin collector they are worth more than the face value.

I am old enough to remember when, back in 1968, people were waiting on line outside the Federal reserve bank in New York to turn in their Silver certificates in exchange for little plastic bags of silver dust.

And if you sell them through a classifieds or auction you could get more for them than from a dealer.

Yeah, mine are all 1957B. I will give ebay a shot because I really doubt that they will have any value in the future as far as trade. Maybe somewhere down the line when Canada, USA and Mexico are one and someone wants to buy a little nostalgia.
