Credit Report - Big Deal?

Are employers legally required to check your credit report. Anyone knows if there is a law on that matter?

Why many are worried of negative marks in the credit report? Maybe I am missing something because I do not worry of my negative marks.

A.

Some employers will have a potential candidate sign a release form granting them permission to access your reports for certain high paying positions.

They even check it for 'chump' jobs as well. Everybody's a snooper. I think this practice should be illegal.
