Credit reporting misdemeanors

I heard that the credit bureaus have a record of a person's record if they were convicted. Such as Dui's etc,and misdemanors and more. Is this true and how can you get that off your credit report?I know that it is a public record, but somehow, this just doesn't make sense to how a credit report would be justified in reporting this, that someone has done in their past and paid for it. Does anyone know about this?
