Can he produce the original contract, with signature, front and back that states this?

I guess you have to tell him there is no such thing as US $ only Federal Reserve Notes and other debt instruments.

Ask them to clarify

Why keep guessing? Ask them to specifically and succinctly define and identify what 'good funds" AND (US$) is .. see if they will demand 'payment in a specific form' (see HJR 192)

If they want US$ ask them to explain (legal definition) what an "S" with one line ($) through it means. They won't tell you. I know a couple of guys that paid his child support with several pages of 13pt New Times Roman "$". I also have a friend that paid his appeal bond for a traffic ticket with 237 $'s (S's with one line thru it) and it ws accepted by the court.
