I would consistently refer to a 3rd party collector as a "debt collector" -- it binds them to the "code" which specifically mentions "debt (3rd party) collectors". The use of the term "debt collector" might also give them a hint that you know the law they are subject to... and it might be an intimidation factor in your favor.
