Taxes on Cars

Hello Everyone,

I have a general question. Not seeking legal advice.

If you purchase a car from another country and have the car shipped to the U.S. Can you avoid paying taxes/registration fees on the vehicle once it arrives in the U.S? Thanks

The short answer is "no." Unless you manage to find a way to get it here without it going through customs with the help of a willing accomplice (that's smuggling, by the way), the legitimate customs paper trail will lead you to your county tax assessor for registration and payment of the property taxes. In addition, some motor vehicles from overseas must be certified (fees paid and sometimes even modifications required) to meet emissions requirements.
