INS ~> "Petition for Alien Relative"
Greetings all,
Has anyone here any experience with sponsoring an alien relative? I did not find anything relevant via a few searches, so I thought I'd poll the board here.
I'm evaluating my options for my spouse and want not to step into any of the .gov pitfalls/traps. This may be futile as they hold all the cards on this process, but I am still hopeful for remedy. I realize I've already compromised by "marriage" though my local state, but that can be remedied (& we plan to once this legal process is completed) & I was actually able to accomplish that with no SS#, and signing "without prejudice, ucc 1-207" (there were not other document issues, such as federal citizenship, etc.,) on the marriage "license".
But now, looking at the required INS forms (e.g. I-130) the "red flags" are flying in spades.

A citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States may file this form

Of course, there is no definition of "U.S." nor "United States" provided, nor an option for "U.S. national". There is an option for "lawful permanent resident alien" but...
At least the form says "if any" (as opposed to "required") next to U.S. Social Security.
Any any rate, I'll leave it there for now before digging into this immigration process further.
Any/all thoughts, insights &/or experience appreciated.
Cheers,
Dane

Thank you Sir. I used to live in Chi-Town too. Late night? Now I'm nostalgic for Geno's pizza, Guinness and frozen Jäger (followed next morning by a bloody Mary). ;)

Thanks kindly for the invite! I'd like to but I gave all that stuff up long ago. Running the gauntlet that is current airline travel isn't enticing either, but I may travel there this summer.
Apologies for the sidetrack down memory lane there.. heh (good memories)
back to topic ~> does anyone have any advice on how to secure privileges for an alien (spouse)? I suspect this is quite the difficult scenario as the Federal gov seems to have a monopoly on immigration, which is why I did not ask how to "assert rights". This is stressing & depressing... I wish the lenders would foreclose on the whole bankrupt, corrupt enterprise or that it would just collapse under the weight of it's own contradictions soon. When is that derivatives bubble gonna pop anyhow?! (please please please please)
Cheers,
Dane

What kind of privileges you are talking about.
Is it invitation for your spouse to come here or to derive benefits here or what? You have to be more specific for knowledgeable members to give you advice or lead you to the right answer.

Specifics eh? Well, I'm not being picky. Does anyone have any experience in obtaining nationality with "alien" relatives in the uSA? If so, were you the "sponsor" and did you follow the INS guidelines or some other procedure?
As far as what we're personally looking for... something along the lines of "permanent resident" and then "U.S. citizenship" seems the best we can attain for her. If there is some way for her to become a U.S. national that is, of course, preferred. I'm also hopeful I don't have to perjure myself on the federal alter in the process but, as I stated in my first post, the INS forms are very presumptuous.
Cheers,
Dane
Ps. Please don't mistake my use of the term "privileges" as seeking government welfare or something. lol! We want as little interaction with any government as absolutely possible. I am just not confusing the term privilege with right. Unfortunately, being as my spouse was not born here, it would seem we would have to appeal to the .gov for her "permission" (to reside here, to be able to travel abroad, etc.,) in order to avoid their harassment and otherwise live as freely as possible. So this is seeking a state-granted privilege (I have no illusions). Hence my query = is this the case? and, if so, what is the best way to proceed?
If it were 40 years ago I'd just say to hell with the whole thing and pilot us where ever we wanted to travel myself.
