One instrument of ratification on the part of the United States included the three agreements. There is a quite incomplete duplicate of it in the file, signed by Jefferson; some parts of the paper have been torn away, including the imprint of the Great Seal and the attest of Madison; and the texts of the three agreements are not now with that single sheet of paper.

Certainly seems a shame that the only instrument of ratification of this treaty on file is a copy and it was treated with such disrespect that the imprint of the Great Seal has been removed.

The Constitution contains the protection of the unlimited right to contract and a treaty is a form of contract.

The United States is a 'person' created by the unanimous agreement of 13 separate countries and has the same right to contract (treaty) as any other 'person'. The United States chose to contract with the French. The contract stipulates that inhabitants shall be admitted to the 'union'; i.e., inhabitants (individually) have the right to be admitted as states.

Novel thought. Not surprising an authenticated copy of this treaty showing congressional ratification would be mutilated, ya' think?

That is cute {not being humourous .. it is cute}; howsomeever I don't think a picture of the cover is quite what is meant by an authenticated copy of the document including ratification by Congress.
