Overpayment to court result in pocketing the rest?

After filing my appeal for a 250 dollar cumulative fine for dastardly traffic deeds like driving with an expired driver's license and not putting on my current tag on my plate(in my glovebox, looking for a fight, aren't I?), I still had to also pay the fine. So I mailed a check for 260 bucks to the courthouse. That is 10 dollars extra for those a bit slower in their math.
Today I called the court, one month later. They will be mailing me a receipt showing that all fines are zeroed out.
I didn't ask what she did with the rest of the money. She didn't have a record in front of her of the total of the check. Just the full application of each of the fines.
Any thoughts here?
Thanks,
scott

Re: Overpayment

Greetings scottinalaska,

I have firsthand knowledge of a similar situation in Vermont. A court surcharge was overpaid by 2 fiction dollars. Several months later, my friend got a check from the state treasurer for precisely 2 fiction dollars with no explanation as to why. But, we knew ahead of time what had happened.

I think they discovered it at the end of their fiscal year when their numbers didn't crunch. She got the check from the unclaimed properties department right about the same time they list all those names in the papers every year.

This is not unlike other stories in business related activities. Just the other day another friend got a check in the mail for twenty-five cents and, of course, it took thirty-seven cents just to mail it.

Their numbers have gotta CRUNCH!!!

Sincerely,
truth

Can the Children say "deficit"?

money order

Scott, while I am in no way on the same level of knowledge as the other here on this board, I have read, or browsed, some other sites, and maybe here, that seem to indicate that the use of a Postal Money Order is better than a check; some authors seem to think that it's even better than green-backs. I myself don't fully understand this - one autohr seemed to indicate that they are notes of the United States, not Federal Reserve notes. *Perhaps* the federal government still has some silver? And since the old Post office department people were once assayers for mineral prospectors (copper, silver, gold diggers) ... maybe it's a better thing to use their Money Orders?

I'll grep my html archive to see if I have a page.

your brother in christ idknow.

Courts, at least those I hear about, will not keep (or pocket) any overpayments, at least none that exceed one dollar. They will make an effort to refund the overage. If it seems to cost them more than the refund itself, remember that this is your tax dollar at work.

One of the events leading to the Montana Freemen confrontation was that one of Leroy Schweitzer's buddies deliberately overpaid a small fine (I forget what for, maybe a traffic violation). He actually left extra money (I forget how much, perhaps $50 too much) on the court clerk's desk and dashed off. The overage was immediately deposited in a separate account in the local bank, a check for the full amount was written out and sent to this man, which had the result of refunding his overpayment and emptying the bank account. But the Freemen kept referring to that bank account number as if it still held money - an apparent infinite amount of money - and used that account number when printing up their worthless funny money.

Scott,

I think the whole idea behind tendering payment in the form of postal MOs is that they are (supposedly) backed by gold.
