There is a sickening trend followed by both law enforcement and private citizens. It is the idea that if something "looks suspicious" they must stick their nose in and snoop about.

A true story to demonstrate what happens. This happened to me and is a good story you don't want to skip.

I was on my way home from town the other day, just minding my business, when I noticed the guy directly in front of me at the stop sign was getting out of his car and walking toward me.

Since he was a shrimpy little fellow, I had no qualms in putting down my window to see what he had to say.

The first words out of his mouth were "Were you the one who hit that other car back there?"

I simply looked at him with a blank look on my face, it took me a few seconds to figure out that:

A) there must have been a accident of some kind further down the road.
B) somehow he had arrived at the conclusion that a party to the accident had fled the scene.
C) I had a driver's side dented fender and was headed away from the wreck, so I was "suspicious"
D) he was the man to put this whole thing straight!

He pointed at the front fender again and demanded to know, "what happened to your headlight!?"

I began shaking my head at this point, running through my options. Should I cuss the pretentious, pimply, weasley little bastard out and tell him to mind his own business and stop blocking the highway? Should I jump out and take my whacker stick to his head? Or should I just drive off?

I decided to go with the latter, as I was pressed for time and the other options would waste even more of my time. So I hit the ditch and went around him. Apparently, not answering his questions and leaving the scene was even more suspicious I heard him making more inquiries in the direction of my bumper as I sped away.

A state trooper was coming through just then, and the little rat flagged him down, so now he is blocking the entire highway in both directions and traffic was piling up all over. That is the last thing I saw in my rear view, and I hoped the trooper would give him a good tongue lashing for being such a menace.

At any rate, this is just a good example of what happens when people stick their noses where they don't belong. This guy had no involvement in the wreck (if there even was one), or he would have KNOWN who the other party was. In fact, I doubt that he even knew for sure that there WAS ANOTHER PARTY, he just drove by and saw a one car accident and presumed that their was another party involved. Then he presumed that party had fled. Then he presumed that party was me. Then he presumed to have the authority to block the highway and question me.

People need to mind their own @#$!%ing business!!!

Presumption

Sui Juris, I agree with your post about people feeling the need to know what thier neighbor is doing. When they are on the receiving end, they tend to take a different stance and try to be the victim.

I have noticed that people in general invest too much energy in things of "no value" and therefore go around and not make any sense.

The thing about Truly Nolen being neighborhood watchdogs is less of an act of being a good neighbor and more of free publicity.
They as a company doesn't really care about other peoples property than trying to get more clients by giving the perception of a company who cares. It is the revenue that will be generated from that article that they care about.

As far as the employees of Truly Nolen, they will have those that truly try to be a good citizen (which they would call in something if they thought it was suspicious), those that don't care, and those who are just afraid (for whatever reason they give).

I am venting my thoughts on the subject of "Good Corporate Citizen" perception and reality.

Peace be with You!

Unhappy

I think a good citizen should worry more about the needy and less about being the center of attention and a butt kisser to the law. You were correct if he saw the accident (if there was one) he would have known if it were you. You were much nicer than I would have been I would have told him to get in his car and mind his own darn business that if it had been me I would still be there and no one would be looking for me. Sick people looking for merit badges for implying you may have done something you knew nothing about. It is worse than gossip and may have caused you a lot of grief unnessarily worse than he already had. Sorry it happen to you.
