CAVEAT: I memorized this poem in 1955 and I have never met Timothy McVey

William Ernest Henley. 1849–1903

7. Invictus

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance 5
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade, 10
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate: 15
I am the captain of my soul.

A Dream Like Mine

Artist: Bruce Cockburn

(CHORUS)
When you've got a dream like mine
Nobody can take you down
When you've got a dream like mine
Nobody can push you around

Today I dream of how it used to be
Things were different before
The picture shifts to how it's going to be
Balance restored

When you know even for a moment
That it's your time
Then you can walk with the power
Of a thousand generations

(Chorus)

Beautiful rocks -- beautiful grass
Beautiful soil where they both combine
Beautiful river -- covering sky
Never thought of possession, but all this was mine

When you know even for a moment
That it's your time
Then you can walk with the power
Of a thousand generations
(Chorus)
(Dawson (Yukon Territories) -- August 17, 1990)
("A Dream Like Mine" grew from the book of that title by M.T. Kelly)

Crosby Stills Nash Young - Southern Cross

Got out of town on a boat goin' to southern islands.
Sailing a reach before a following sea.
She was making for the trades on the outside,
And the downhill run to Papeete

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas.
We got eighty feet of waterline nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon, I tried to call you,
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.

Think about how many times I have fallen.
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world, lookin' for that woman-girl
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will.

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time,
You understand now why you came this way.
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small,
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day.

So I'm sailing for tomorrow. My dreams are a-dying.
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain.
I have my ship, and all her flags are a-flying.
She is all that I have left, and music is her name.

Think about how many times I have fallen.
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world, lookin' for that woman-girl
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will.

So we cheated and we lied and we tested.
And we never failed to fail; it was the easiest thing to do.
You will survive being bested.
Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you
In the Southern Cross.

I went out and bought the NIN album with "Head like a Hole" the day I heard it. Easy to see where that sentiment came from if you're in the music business.

Anything by SteelHeart. Michael Matijevic is one of the greatest vocalists I've ever heard. Just when you think he couldn't go any higher, he nails a higher note and sends chills down your spine.

For those of you who may not know much about SteelHeart, or the vocalist, Michael Matijevic did the vocals for the movie RockStar, starring Mark Walberg. I watched this movie today (I have the DVD) and I still get chills to hear Michael Matijevic sing.

SteelHeart rocks!

Watchin the wheels go round and round.

People say I’m crazy doing what I’m doing
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say that I’m o.k. well they look at me kind of strange
Surely you’re not happy now you no longer play the game

People say I’m lazy dreaming my life away
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I’m doing fine watching shadows on the wall
Don’t you miss the big time boy you’re no longer on the ball

I’m just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go

Ah, people asking questions lost in confusion
Well I tell them there’s no problem, only solutions
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I’ve lost my mind
I tell them there’s no hurry
I’m just sitting here doing time

I’m just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go

Reminds me of,
myself !

Dokken - Breaking The Chains.

Sit there thinkin'
In your room
You feel the pressure
You're goin' crazy too
The walls around you
Closin' in
You need a change

Claustophobic
Feelin' scared
You need somebody
But no one seems to care
A one way ticket
A change of pace
You've had enough
Can't take no more

(chorus 1)
Breaking the chains around you
Nobody else can bind you
Take a good look around you
Now you're breaking the chains

Got this letter
Came today
From my baby
Who left me yesterday
Said she loves
She'll come back
She wants to try

I won't let her
She'll be upset
I know it's better
Than somethin' i'll regret
She's been dishonest
And insincere
I lost my mind
Twenty times a year

(chorus 2)
Breaking the chains around me
Nobody else can bind me
Take a good look around me
Now i'm breaking the chains

(solo)

Woke up today
I'm alone
I look around
But baby you were gone
But i don't mind
And i don't worry
I will survive

I'm alone
Now that you're gone
Don't need nobody
To hold or tie me down
I broke the chains
So let me be
I've gotta be free

(repeat chorus 2)
(repeat chorus 2)

Tornado by Sara Groves

Okay, I know most of you posted "oldies", but this is what came to mind tonight.
This song was on a new CD I'd purchased just prior to separating from my first husband (for truly valid reasons). I actually had two of Sara's CDs, and I practically bathed in them for a couple months. Her songs helped me make it through a difficult time. This particular song reminded me that how I respond to difficult people or circumstances affects my own well-being. Now it's time to pull it back out for dealing with my dear husband's ex, who honestly and truly is a tornado!. http://www.saragroves.com/

You live your life like a tornado • Destruction follows everywhere you go • And you have no plans to stop or slow oh • I will not let this bitter root grow in me • I will not let you leave that legacy • But it gets so hard when pain is all I see oh •• Every time I find healing you're making a new mess • And I am learning the real meaning of forgiveness • • And I tried to remove myself from your path • But I keep waking up in the aftermath • So I pick up again and say I won't look back oh • And I will not let you leave that legacy • But this constant fight is breaking me oh • Every time I find healing you're making a new mess • And I am learning the real meaning of forgiveness • • And it hurts when you hit at the hearts of the ones I love • When everything you touch is rumble and dust • And it gets so hard to know how to trust • But I will not let that bitter root grow • I will not let it no no • But it gets so hard oh • • Every time I find healing you're making a new mess • And I am learning the real meaning of forgiveness • And I could move and never send you a forwarding address • Or I could learn the real meaning of forgiveness • •

An old classic...

To dream ... the impossible dream ...
To fight ... the unbeatable foe ...
To bear ... with unbearable sorrow ...
To run ... where the brave dare not go ...

To right ... the unrightable wrong ...
To love ... pure and chaste from afar ...
To try ... when your arms are too weary ...
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

This is my quest, to follow that star ...
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ...
To fight for the right, without question or pause ...
To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause ...

And I know if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie will lie peaceful and calm,
when I'm laid to my rest ...

And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

Classic Monty Python

Monty Python - Constitutional Peasant

For those of you who have never seen this skit...

Medieval England, several rag clad peasants are working in the fields, when King Arthur rides up on his horse, looking for information...

A peasant with an education, and vocabulary to match ! Too funny !

For HIS Glory,
