Oddly enough, in searching for something totally unrelated this morning, I came across this article about government interference with alternative cancer treatment:

Good insight and information in this article about "government" keeping its dirty hands out of our private lives, etc., especially dealing with our private decisions about health care.
But then we have the "parens patria" doctrine, and big brother's belief that they own our children and must protect the children from the parents. I suspect that these parents somewhere along the way asked permission from BB to try alternative measures, or applied for a "benefit", or some insurance stipulation, etc. Once the tyrants latch on, the war has begun, and they have the bigger guns.
