HERE'S Tom's of Maine website for those interested in checking out what they have. I've used their toothpaste and mouthwash, but didn't really care for the particular alcohol free mouthwash I had as I'm still used to the kind with alcohol in it (I know the alcohol isn't good for you).

I'll have to check into the Burts Bees products. I've seen them but haven't tried any of 'em.

Logan, you mention you have fluoride filters on your shower heads. I haven't found any info on whether or not fluoride is absorbed through the skin. Do you know if it is or not? I have been wondering about this for some time as most dentists like giving fluoride treatments. I personally would refuse these but I know someone that was wanting to know. And where can you get these filters from?

The Deepwater lawsuits in New Jersey were over fluoride poisoning. I wonder how this stuff could possibly be good for anything.

Thanks for the heads up on that aluminum based anti-perspirants and shampoo info. When I get home I'll have to see what I have and make changes accordingly.

I had to back off my previous calculation. It would seem I got a toxicologist upset because he doesn't equate RAT tests with PEOPLE tests.

http://homesteadingtoday.com/vb/show...883#post863883

So to satisfy him I did another calculation just looking at how many RATS could be killed by tube of toothpaste - and it turns out the answer is 7. I would be willing to assume he will come back with some arguments about whether these are juvenile RATS or adult but I don't think this will change the resulting conclusions any. Who wants to brush their teeth with RAT POISON? Or who wants to drink water with RAT POISON in it.

I misled you, I did not mean to say I had flouride filters on the shower heads, just on the drinking water. I have regular chlorine filters on the shower heads.

I realize that flouride filters for showers are difficult to find and probably less important to have in the shower as your skin might not absorb flouride as easily as it does the chlorine, but I am not sure.

I do not go to the dentist, or at least it has been a while. I find they are only interested in money and ************s like the medical doctors. Did you know that xylitol actually helps remineralize your teeth? Check this site out.

and here is the site for natural care products from Neways.com

http://www.neways.com/Product/fortify.aspx

(this company was started by a man that is a chemical engineer who discovered that the same ingredients he was using to make industrial chemicals were being used in his personal care products. He is a very intelligent man and was even interviewed on Good Morning America a few years back.)

And palani: thanks for the homesteading forum link. I wish I had known of this site when I still had my goats, but I am considering aquiring some calfs now, so I am happy to have found it.

You might also check out Stevia for sugar replacement. It is about 200 - 300 times sweeter than sugar in liquid form and yet has no calories and doesn't count as a single carb. About two drops in a cup of coffee is all you need to sweeten it.

Stevia is the extract from the leaf of a plant.

Thumbs up Got it

Hey Palani,
Yep, I know stevia. My wife loves it! I, on the other hand, still cannot adjust to the aftertaste. I was raised on natural honey and still enjoy all things sweetened with raw honey. The only downside to using honey is perhaps in baking, where you must simply adjust the liquid ingredient alittle to account for honey instead of sugar. Also fructose olio sacyrides (FOS) is a good substitute for sugar in baking along side xylitol. Both are derived from fruit sugars and are a little more expensive but not to bad if baking and sweetening is used minimumly.

Tastes like black licorice or something. I didn't really like it. Is there anything else?

I might try honey and see how that works in coffee.

I hear the main problem with white sugar is the bleaching agents used on it.

KAOS -

For me Stevia has just a sweet taste with no particular flavor. You might check out a different vendor since it could vary. The brand I have is SweetLeaf Stevia Clear Liquid http://store.yahoo.com/drkowalski/stexclli2ozw.html

Talking I love Licorice!

No, not really. I love licorice, and black strap molasses.
Stevia can vary among brands with some being more bitter than others. Also, it doesn't take very much. Using too much can also give a bitter aftertaste. My wife loves it because it has natural anti-fungal properties. Try xylitol or FOS. But, when dealing with the overpowering taste of coffee & its inherent tannic acids, you would have to use something stronger in order to cover it up. Try Sweet N' Low, it's the least evil of the synthetics. I am fairly sure that all of these sugar subs can be found at your somewhat local health food store. Just try to find the most health conscious manufacturer.

There are PLENTY more problems with white sugar than just the bleaching agents. For one, your body is not built to properly adjust to doses of pure simple sugars in the blood stream. Just like all things, the more complex something is in the body, the more time it takes to be assimilated and therefore the better it is used by the body. White sugar puts a jolt of glucose rapidly into the blood stream because they process the fiber & minerals out of the sugar cane that would normally keep it in balance. And because it's so simple to break down it just feeds bacteria or any other pathogen, which leads to cavities, or worse, to serious disease over a longer period of time. Plus the constant sugar jolts, put the pancreas on high alert all the time which, over time, will wear it out & then you have diabetes.

Note: Brought the wife in on this one. Excerpts above inserted by her. (See why I keep her around)

Logan

P.S. Using honey in your coffee, or anything else, will change the taste. (Just a heads up)

At present, U.S. public water systems serving over 140 million people are fluoridated with 200,000 tons of commercial grade hydrofluosilicic acid (H2SiF6) and sodium silicofluoride (Na2SiF6), together called "silicofluorides" (or "SiFs")

Source of this information is a paper written by
Dr. Roger D. Masters
Research Professor of Government & Nelson A. Rockefeller Professor Emeritus
President, Foundation for Neuroscience & Society

INFO FLASH - 200,000 TONS OF TOXIC WASTE ARE DUMPED IN PUBLIC WATER SUPPLIES - HOW IS THAT FOR PERSPECTIVE?

This is not even pharmaceutical grade but rather industrial grade.

Has anyone reading this signed an agreement to be medicated in such a manner?

Logan,

looks like we both have team mates, and help meets...

Kewl.

You are correct about the sugar.

Let me turn you on to something new.

We tried SORGHUM. (NOT SORGHUM MOLASSES, just STRAIGHT SORGHUM)

It ROCKS with Coffee. (I doubt I will ever give up my morning coffee, but that's about my only vice, other than the beer I love, which I prefer more expensive (All natural, or if possible, unpasteurized) beers. Liberty Ale by Anchor Steam is my fave...

But the Sorghum, is a taste, that once experienced, turns blah into gourmet.

If you like coffee, I recommend you try this one:

Counter Culture

Guatemala Antiqua

Best bean I've tasted.

Also, Rapadura is a good alternative for sugar.
