In addition to the physiological and cleansing effects, one of the things that fasting does is that it brings you closer to God (who is a spirit) as it forces you to discipline your body in such a way that will result in increased spiritual awareness. Fasting took place throughout the Bible as Moses fasted, Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness, the Apostle Paul fasted and fasting was a part of the normal routine of the early church. Fasting should be and was coupled with prayer and the combination of these two is very powerful. It is through prayer and fasting that the most powerful of demonic spirits were cast out we are told and this was evidenced in Mark 9:9 and Matthew 17:21.
Mark 9:17(KJV) And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;
Mark 9:18(KJV) And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
The disciples were unable to cast out this particular demon and so Jesus Himself had to take care of it Himself.
Mark 9:28(KJV) And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
Mark 9:29(KJV) And he said unto them,
This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
