Re:I Choose Self Sufficiency

All,

It pays to know how to live off the land.& Personally, I have taken no precautions except to the extent that I will be able to hunt as well as protect myself.

That is enough.

Food, water, shelter can all be had from the land... if you have the know how... therefore, "know how".

Re:I Choose Self Sufficiency

You mentioned 'alternative energy".

I have been doing some homework on "renewable" energy, and it really is a great control piece that a man or woman can take over their own lives.

Being connected to the power company is surrendering your freedom of privacy. Why should they know how much you use, or have the ability to cut it off at will?

I better shut up, before I go off on a trail, but making the investment up front will pay off BIG TIME in the long run.

Sure, it's expensive, but if you are in control of the power system, who cares?

You mentioned in a later post about "unwanteds" not being able to step foot on your property.

With your own RE (Renewable Energy), you can have the security system of your dreams, and they aren't able to shut off your power before their "no knock".

Even better would be an off site server that is recording the motion activated cameras on your property, and there are sites that offer systems that send you pictures of the action. Check out this site:

http://www.skywaysecurity.com/fast_kits.cfm

(couldn't figure out how to make a link on here)

again, there is an up front investment, but does your piece of mind have a price? Mine doesn't, and the offsite server with the pictures could be a real hoot in the scheme of things...

I better shut up now. I am having too much fun talking.

Re:I Choose Self Sufficiency

As far as alternative energy goes, my husband said something interesting the other day.& The funny thing about it is that I haven't even asked him about it.

His goal in thinking it up was to save up some Federal Reserve Notes, which is a good reason.

Anyway, he said that if we run the ground water that we use for irrigation through a coil in our air handler, we wouldn't have to run the air conditioner.& He said that ground water is about 56 degrees, that is certainly cold enough to&do the job.&Of course, this is something that would only work in the summer time.& I don't understand the mechanics of it, but he said that it would take some money to get the coil but it would pay for itself pretty quickly considering the fact that our power bill has doubled in the last year.

I hope that my discription makes sense.& Like I said, he is the one that knows the mechanical terms.

The only drawback that I can see with this is that in order to keep the house cool, we would have to constantly be irrigating.& That would be fine if we didn't then have to cut the grass.& As we have a 2 acre yard, I think that the money being save might go towards hiring somebody to keep the grass cut.

I know that air conditioning wouldn't be a high priority if we were struggling for our very survival, but until then, it sure is nice.

He also has some great ideas about the wind propelled fans being used to create electricity.& I think that this is a pretty widely known technique.& It is my understanding that it is effective and should be used more.& It would be a good way to keep our modern conveniences running if we were cut off from the power company.

Later,
SJ
