Granted, these things are more suitable for commercial sites, but I think the price will come down eventually. Anyway, seems like people want to put up half a million dollar homes these days so what is another 100K.
I did find a few used ones for sale several years ago for around 10k FRN's.
Also, as far as your energy bill, I don't think there is any way you used 3,000 kw. That would be 3 MW. Now you might have used 3,000 kw-hr in a month. At around $.08 per kw-hr that would be a $240 bill a month.

how does my 3000 kw-hr relate to the 30kw turbine? Or, what does the 30kw stand for? It looks like you can either have your stand alone generator/turbine supplying your needs but then I guess you would have to have a battery bank. Or you can hook up your generator to the electric company and they will pay you-credit your account and deduct whatever you use. At least that is what I saw with solar power. Where did you see the used turbines?Wouldn't the 60kw be way too much? I saw one of their case studies showed a 200 room hotel usung three of these turbines..Also most states have tax credits or actual checks they send you for using alternative power. If you can't use the tax credit usually you can sell them at a discount.

Say 3,000 kw-hr would be the energy you consume in a month. The 3,000 kw-hr is proportional to the actual energy used by the utility to supply your house with power, whether it be coal, nuclear, hydro or any other source.
The 30 kw is the instantaneous power the generator is capable of producing. This represents the capacity of the generator along with any lines, transformers, switches etc.
If you divide 3,000 kw-hr by the number of hours in a month (24 hrs * 30 days = 720 hrs/mo) you would get 4.2 kw average power use. Obviously you don't use this on energy on an average basis although the utility would love it if you would. Sometimes you don't use any energy and other times you might use 8-10 times this average rate.
A 30kw generator at 240 volts would be able to put out 125 amps or at 120 it would put out 250 amps. Most houses these days have 200 amp service at 240 volts. However, it wasn't many years ago that a typical house service might have been 100 amps or even 60 amps.
I don't remember where I saw the used ones. It has been several years ago. I would be willing to bet they do come up for sale once in a while. Keep your eye on surplus electrical companies or do a search on the internet for used micro turbine generators.

Weis,
Steven Harris claims it only takes about 5hp to keep your automobile running down an interstate at 55mph or so; If your not towing anything that is. . . . The folks at www.hydrogenappliances.com took and old diesel ford truck and attached the drive shaft to a generator. It produces a great deal of energy at idle just above speed as you suggest w/1800RPM. At idle speed a normal engine w/a 20 gal tank or so will run for quite a while maybe 24/48 hrs or so (I haven;t done a fuel consumption calc yet). In the winter months in the North ya might even be able to find a way to transfer some of that heat the engine produces into your home and gain even more effeciency.

Remember folks if you're playing with electricity this stuff is dangerous. If you don't know what your doing seek professional assistance. An electrician, IBEW member or EE. It does not take a great deal of juice to arc across your body in the right way and poof your doa.
Burn that straw man up right quick.

Here's a PDF on how to have emergency power with deep-cycle batteries, car alternator, and a lawn edger (to use gas only when you need to charge the batteries).
I hope the side will support it....it's just over one MB.
Can't seem to upload it. :(
