Evacuation "crisis" easing up now
After the initial rush (and panic among the townsfolk as to HOW...), things are easing up.
Donated calling cards (donated by townspeople, not the government) finally allowed these people seeking refuge to make contact with relatives and friends who are coming to pick them up for the duration. They have had no means to contact anyone until now. The buses would not stop to let them off in towns they passed through where they knew people. They must first be "processed" (which brings to mind people being being run through a meat grinder...ugh!)
The grief is like a physical presence among them...it is so sad. Many have yet to get word about missing family members. They know at the very least that their lifelong homes are destroyed.
Things got better for these folks as soon as they could remove themselves from the "care" of the government. Being able to contact friends and relatives made a big difference and we actually saw some smiles for the first time.
Do whatever you have to do. Gather your supplies and be ready for anything. Do all you can do to keep from falling into the hands of the feds or relying on them for anything. There is something to be said for falling through the cracks.
Our town just experienced a four day whirlwind. It is basically over for us now. I am proud of the "humanitarian response" we were able to provide. It was all over before FEMA ever caught up with us and that may be all for the best.
I hope that those of you so inclined will spare a prayer now and again for these displaced folks as they try to get on with their lives and those who perished in the flood. I will certainly never forget them.

Here is a little advice.I was in new york when trade center fell,I was just south of houston street about half a mile from towers. One thing is to always carry enough cash to survive for a few days,no cell phones or credit card machines worked on the island when the towers fell it took those systems out.I would also suggest getting in decent walking shape, try to be able to walk 10 miles in a day or twenty miles in two days, where comfortable shoes there were thousands of women in high heels. That had to suck.Have a day pack with some protein bars,a bottle of water or two,a pocket knife,a way to light a fire, and some first aid stuff.

I do not normally..
recommend a book, or a series, but I have kept up on the disaster in NO. in light of keeping in shape, I agree. Just because one is in a city does not mean the body should be neglected. I live in the country, but work in town. I keep my web gear current and in shape, and it is kept in any vehicle I use. I try to always be prepared to "walk out", and I am in very sad shape compared to most folks my age. I'm several pounds overweight, can't even bench press the average phone book, and can hardly see past my own feet. But I am prepared mentally and emotionally to walk out.
as far as recommending books, I recommend both the Ranger Rick Series, and The Ashes Series. The Ashes series is a bit harsh, but it makes a point about what can happen when folks pull together with a common goal. Hmmmm, sounds kinda familiar some how.

This is what most of the major media is saying about Dolores and forcing her out of her home: “Dolores Devron and her husband, Forcell, finally agreed to go. Dolores Devron said she was relieved the couple were allowed to take their dog with them but angry they were ordered out.”

http://websearch.cnn.com/search/search?source=cnn&invocationType=search%2Ftop&site s=web&query=Dolores+Devron+
This is not the case. This news station sheds a little more light on the subject: “Dolores Devron lashed out in anger as soldiers led her and her husband, Forcell, out of their flooded home.”

The reason I am saying this is because Fox 5 News of Atlanta played the video of what happened. She didn’t want to leave and so she pulled a gun on the cops. The cops pounced on her like a street thug. Understand this lady is old and didn’t want to leave her dog. Then they escorted her out. Then the news crew interviewed a Harley looking guy who said he is not leaving and will defend himself. God be with you man.

One other piece of advice I want to pass along.I have hypertension and I need daily medication to feel right.I try to keep at least an extra month of supply of any necessary medication, your doctor will be sympathetic to this. One thing I like to do is ask for double the strength of the pill I need and then cut pill in half with a pill cutter 30 month supply last 60 days and is usually about the same price.Do not overlook farm supply stores as a source of first aid.Just about all vet supplies are made as well as human first aid products. You can get large bottles of surgical scrub iodine really cheap you can get cellophan pouches of tetrocyclean misspelled or other antibiotics cheap, these last a couple of years and are dosed by pounds of body weight.Since humans are alot like pigs physically the doses are about alike, don,t forget your pets by some bags of dry pet food, get a good water filter berky or the like, also get some fire extinguishers fires start when the lights go out, some of my ex girlfriends loved candels all around the room fire hazards in my opinion.Thats probably why I am single.
