I had suggested putting garlic in the recipe. I know my youngest (3 years old) complains its "burning". I use 8 chopped garlic cloves in mine. My older ones (my oldest is 14) of course do not have any problem with it. They even add 2-3 cayenne drops to theirs. We have been fortunate to not have to drink this because of an illness with the exception of 1 time which was 7 years ago during the holidays. 3 of us not only had this but did the onion poultices as well. We tend to use it more as a preventative especially after we've been around someone sick. For example, 3 months ago my friend and her 7 children were diagnosed with whooping cough! Since we had gotten together a couple of times before that and it is highly contagious I began treating all of us as if we were sick! (ha-a little paranoid huh?) We lived on the "garlic syrup" as well as everything else for the next 2 weeks.

Talking It's hard to go wrong with garlic or onions!

It seems that the reason garlic is so effective for so many things is due in part to the main ingredient, allicin, which is a complex mixture of substances, mainly allyl sulfides (sulphur).

These are produced by enzyme activity in the bulb, where their balance and effectiveness are dependent upon the presence of assimilable sulphur.

This sulphur is produced in the soil by a number of microorganisms, principally certain tiny fungi (beneficial) that are unable to grow without the presence of humus.

Organically grown garlic, then is believed to be most effective, because that grown with chemical fertilizer does not have enough humus to support the fungi.

The above information was taken from a little book I have called, "Carrots Love Tomatoes," a must have if wanting to learn about companion planting for successful gardening.

Whether planting for yourself, or buying in the store, fresh "organic" herbs are the way to go!

Even honey by itself can burn on me at times, let alone a 3 year old. Try having a small glass of water as a chaser. My children (2, 4, & 6) have done well with it. Best to you and them.
