I want to quit my job, and do it right if possible.
Well I work as a defense contractor doing IT work for the USMC in the DC metro area (Northern Virginia).
IT jobs are supposedly plentiful here, but I think it is just a bunch of bored recruiters meeting their quota if you ask me.
So I am at my wits end with this "team" that I work for at my defense contractor.
My blood pressure is sky high and I have refrained from walking out the door or inducing bodily harm over the past nearly 2 years that I have worked there.
I am not the luckiest guy either. I have ended up unemployed for 6 months at a time when I have quit my jobs with no other job to back me up even when I sent out 100 resumes per day.
I am a "child" support debtor to and a "second" family to think about which means I always have to be working.
I haven't been to work for the past few days on the premise that my wife lost her father a few months ago and I was too scared to take beerevement time, but that has backfired so I am now spending time with her.
The conditions that I am encountering are as follows:
1) Insults (not ethnic, gender specific, etc) by other employees. (Nothing that the EEOC covers etc).
2) Getting great reviews, but suddenly getting average reviews when it comes to "raise" time.
3) Being forced to cross every "I" and cross every "T", and being publically reprimanded when I don't whereas everyone else makes exactly the same mistakes or worse and nothing is ever said.
4) Getting my keys, phone, and belongings removed, and not having them returned until I find them.
5) Having other "team" members sit at my seat and play around with my workstation and do goofy things to it if I should ever forget to "lock" it.
6) Being micro-manged by other "team" members when they have no authority to tell me what to do. When I complained, the boss told me that I should just confront them. When I confronted them, the boss told me "maybe I should just look for another job" if I can't take instructions from other "team" members.
7) Someone put a Large "Sideshow" label on my cubicle. When I checked the definition of Sideshow I got:
“a subordinate incident of little importance relative to the main event”....
8) Unqualified individuals are being promoted and tasked to items which I am perfectly qualified to maintain. I am left pigeonholed.
9) My work which must be substantiated on a white board is being erased at a faster rate than everyone elses which gives the impression that I don't do anything.
10) My hours are being erased from my electronic timesheet. I advised the boss of such in writing, he fell silent, then formally reprimanded me about it days later.
11) I am required to completed government training electronically, and do complete it. A few days later, I am put on a "black list" and accused of not completing the requirements.
12) My authentication credentials are so numerous that they change every day. I am unable to authenticate to numerous websites from work as they are blocked by the firewall forcing me to allocate my home pc for business use. I am forced to install a variety of relatively complex software and/or compatible operating systems to complete duties that cannot be completed at work.
If by chance I don't have the OS that is required, I am in violation and get reprimanded.
I have a letter to this MASSIVE CORPORATION and it's officer's all drafted up.
In a nutshell, I told them that I am taking a leave of absence for my wife's mental state, but refuse to return unless they:
1) Resolve it permanently
2) Terminate my employment.
3) Transfer me out of there.
I asserted that I had not quit.
I need some ammo just in case I get fired, so that I have a better chance at unemployment should I need it just for a while until I get my new job.
I am pretty sure that I am on the right track, and no job is worth my health.
All of my managers have fallen silent when I complain or as I mentioned, told me to look elsewhere.
I personally think I am being set up so that I can quit and have a lower chance at unemployment.
I just want your opinions, because you are awesome here.
Thanks!

Dude, You need to go surfin' and say "Enuff already"! My heart goes out to you. In this modern world of endless work or the prospect of no work. It is a symptom of a distingrating society where flaccid pretenders reap the big rewards and everybody else is told to pound sand or else. You are not alone. Clean waves and palm trees out on 'Surfari' thousands of miles from the nearest highway patrolman(or pinhead 'boss) is a good place to be.

Hey
Well, with the exception of the work troubles, your situation sounds very similar to mine.
Last year, I left a VERY well paying job as a consultant to LockMart, sold a couple of homes in NoVa, and moved to rural Maine.
I couldn't take being part of the "machine" that was wasting billions of dollars a year. Couldn't take the traffic (50 mile commute each way into the Beltway). Couldn't take the enormous bureaucracy that had no idea what they were doing.
I haven't been this happy in almost 20 years. I've got 10 acres in God's country in a very laid-back community.
There is software work here - both in Portland and Augusta. Granted, it doesn't pay nearly as well as the gov't jobs, but at least it's honest work...
PM me if you want more details...
Best of luck to you...
Yours in Liberty,
Dave

Thank you both. I realize that my post was half venting etc. Oh well It is in the "Misc" section.
I'll tell you, I have one employee in there who even says, "lets see how much he can take before he snaps".
I am also tired of every 25 year old at work who thinks they know it all. They know it all about their savings, their 401k, their education, US History and it is non stop ME, ME, ME. I'll tell you what, they don't know a thing.
My hire documents have even been lost and they have requested that I sign new ones.
I think these guys want me to quit, batter their faces in and go to jail.
I don't want to just quit though without sending a letter to their CEO, and I want to do this right.
I come from South Florida, where there are NO jobs doing this sort of thing, even though folks pretend there are....and if there are jobs in IT, you must speak 2 languages or more.
I like the area due to its alleged abundance in jobs and still think the traffic is worse there, so I am used to it.
I also don't want to leave this area because I don't want to mess with my visitation scheme AGAIN which is arguably restrictive to the state of virginia.
*Oh by the way, if anyone pm's me with work at home schemes, I am going to ignore you*

That would be the first bastard I snapped on.

I disagree...you can't do as much from jail which is right where they want you.

If anyone were to mess with my workstation they might discover a disgusting habit I have of picking my nose and leaving the fruits on the CRT.
I find a beans and broccoli breakfast generally starts working around coffee break time. Something else might work for you.
If you think about it you are not in a bad position. Be creative and enjoy! You might just decide your job is so much fun you won't want to leave.
