Our rural community started a 'community garden' that welcomes all to work the soil. The food produced is given to the local food pantry for distribution. Perhaps you know of a vacate lot near you that could be so utilized.
Container gardening is also an option. Winters get cold in Illinois, but I keep a large container with a tomato plant and this year brought in basil as well. It's a start and we have little tomatoes all year! I usually have herbs on the windowsill as well, but they got too big and went outside last spring. I will try to remember to bring cuttings in this fall.
For those who have never worked the soil, there is something fundamental about reaching in and having a hand full of it in your hands. Watering and nurturing as the plants prove that God exists in simple things.
I come from a long line of farmers, but my parents chose to be city-dwellers in out rural area, but my summers were spent on the farm -- milking cows, slopping pigs, gathering eggs, walking beans, and detasseling -- start small but do something!
