Stand up in court?
Hey Weis,
That idea is commnly referred to as a "poor mans pattent". I actually have used it numerous times in the past. I have had some ideas and even songs on tape (lyrics and sheet music) that at one time I wanted to protect. I have put together the following....
Mail 2 copies of what you want to protect to yourself (DO NOT OPEN !)
Mail 1 Copy to a Friend you trust NOT TO OPEN IT
and Mail another copy to a Family member you trust NOT TO OPEN IT
As you stated, the theory is that if you feel that you are being ripped off, and the arguing party says there is not pattent, whip out your evidence in court and claim the US GOVERNMENT has postmarked the day I came up with my ideas. (its kind of scary we have to use the government again for this.....maybe we should trust em....yeah right)
The only problem I know of is that I have no proof if this actually works in court. Logically it seems to sound like a great idea, but fortunately, I have never had to argue that my ideas trumped another. (now that I think of it, maybe my music and other invention ideas actually suck)
I was told to do this years ago by a friend who has actually used this method AND also has pattented other inventions. I will see if he has ever used this method in courts.
