Talking Houston Mayor and school districts (dropouts)

Today Houston's mayor along with area school districts launched an effort to get teens who dropped out of school back into school. Can you imagine the reaction of some teenager opening his or her door to find the mayor, a school principle, and a high school senior with big smiles saying come get on the school bus to go to a registration party?

Well this is exactly what happened today. Houston has about five or six school districts and they all united to fight "dropoutism" (their word not mine). Hmmm that word from educated people made me sit up and wonder what was really going on.

These registration parties were held all over the city, dropouts were served food and drinks with huge helpings of encouragement from adults and fellow students. Someone on the news likened it to a pep rally with cheerleaders but without the athletes.

Sounds wonderful, right? Do you know what it's really about? DOLLARS ($) AND CENTS (¢). School districts lose out on receiving tens of thousands of dollars annually per child. Yes, money they could use to refurbish offices , pay for vacations, expensive luncheons, bonuses, etc,, for district superintendents and their favorite workers.

Sidenote:

Many of Houston's urban schools are dilapidated and overcrowded. Overcrowded due to closed schools' students shipped to other schools. This don't make any sense because the districts all take in unbelievable amounts from the state and from local school taxes. Well at least the tax laden citizens can take comfort the superintendents have generous benefits.

There was no concern for actually teaching the children anything just getting them into school. One parent made the statement, "my child was an honor roll student when we brought her to this school district now her grades and interest in school has fallen". Maybe shabby moldy buildings and classrooms filled to the brim could be the reason.

Too bad this whoopla wasn't about getting kids back in school so they could learn how to use the object that sits atop of their shoulders.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - August 24, 2008 - Habitual truants in San Antonio are to be fitted with satellite tracking systems under a new program to crack down on non-attendance.

Under the scheme, courts will be able to order pupils with a record of skipping school to wear ankle bracelets with Global Positioning System monitoring, similar to those issued to convicted criminals.

Linda Penn, a Bexar County justice of the peace, said she expected about 50 students in four San Antonio-area school districts would wear the anklets during a six-month pilot project. She said the length of time the students would have to wear the anklets would be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Authorities are concerned about the link between truancy and juvenile delinquency and criminal activity.

"We are at a critical point in our time where we can either educate or incarcerate," Ms. Penn said. "We can teach them now or run the risk of possible incarceration later on in life. I don't want to see the latter."

Targeted pupils, expected to mostly be teenagers, will not be allowed to remove the ankle bracelets. Those selected for tagging would include students with gang affiliations, a history of running away and playing truant and those with multiple court appearances.

"Students and parents must understand that attending school is not optional," Ms. Penn said. "When they fail to attend school, they are breaking the law."

Why not just have schools that are worth going to?

Or is that too simple a solution.

Or maybe have the children stay at home and help grow food.

I guess writing more stats and regs and having more blue ribbon committees develop more asinine programs like that one makes a lot more $ense.

As for the children?

F'em if they can't take a joke.

Of course they are.

They certainly are NOT concerned about prevention of criminal activity though.

Criminal activity is a cash cow.

That is why there are so many "laws."

Especially STUPID laws.

Law enforcement.

Big bucks, job security.

Crime prevention.

Job extinction, if done well.
