The coder, fortunately unhurt, saw the machine's battery explode in flames, causing a fireball and loads of smoke. Bad manufacturing? Al-quaeda inside? Or propaganda/PSYOPS to pave way to making laptops or anything with a battery designated as arms under ITAR? ;D

Since any battery being charged has a fire/explosion hazzard, it'd say it was bad craftmanship (thanks to going to China for cheap knockoffs rather that pay more for quality).

Now if the battery just went up when not charging, that is more suspicious, but not impossible.
