Paul never knew Jesus alive, and may have had only a fragmentary account of Jesus's teachings to work with; he doesn't seem to know anything of the life of Jesus except for the manner of his death. Certainly there is a great deal of doctrine and attitude in the Pauline epistles that cannot be found in the Gospels themselves.

Paul claims in Galatians 1:11,12, that he didn't get his gospel (gospel of Christ) from the other Apostles. This doesn't mean he didn't know about the gospel (gospel of the kingdom) they preached. He was among the chief Apostles at Jerusalem on at least three occasions, claiming in Gal. 1:18 to have spent 14 days with Peter. Yet it is clear from chapter two, verses 7,8,* (KJV), that he wasn't preaching the same thing Peter (Cephas), James and John were preaching.

* Bible versions destroy the distinction between the two gospels in these verses by changing the preposition "of" to "to." Go figure.
