Lord of the (mutated) flies
In their quest to prove that spontaneous mutatiion could somehow be responsible for the diversity of life on this planet, scientists have continually attempted to reproduce this effect in order to prove this theory.
Most notably, by bombarding fruit flies with radiation (about the most mutagenic substance known to man). Because fruit flies reproduce so rapidly, they hoped to create a new species somehow. Instead, they have created generation after generation of pathetically deformed fruit flies.
It seems to me that this experiment proved several things.
1. Humans can be unspeakably cruel.
2. Spontaneous mutations caused by radiation are almost always detrimental, and therefore would be unlikely to result in the evolution of advantageous characteristics.
3. Mutations are unlikely to occur without intelligent (even if cruel...) intervention, because these fly experiments were presided over by a higher form of life (humans).
4. Even if the experiment resulted in punctuated equilibrium, and a new species of fly actually resulted, it would prove intelligent creation, not evolution, because it would not have occurred without human experimentation. The same goes for cloning, or any other form of genetic tampering we may engage in...
