Was 'Original' sin original?

The formal dogma of original sin wasn't formed until St. Augustine did so in 418 He wrote:

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"the deliberate sin of the first man is the cause of original sin" (De nupt. et concup., II, xxvi, 43)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then the Second Council of Orange ( 529) wrote:

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"one man has transmitted to the whole human race not only the death of the body, which is the punishment of sin, but even sin itself, which is the death of the soul" (Denz., n. 175 (145))
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So the concept was codified until 400-500 . Before then there was disagreement. But the concept has been part of Christianity from the beginning -- just not accepted by everyone. Read Romans 5:

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned— 13for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.

The concept of "original sin" and its effect on man comes right out of the Word. These quotes are no more than commentary on the Word.

A thorough reading of the Word will make this evident to the reader as you have demonstrated with your last quote.

Is there a specific point you are attempting to make?

Remember the movie The MATRIX?

Just like when Neo says "There is no spoon,"

With this post, "there is no point."

From The Vatican Rag, by Tom Lehrer (circa 1950's):
Quote:
Get in line in that processional,
Step into that small confessional,
There the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original.

If it is, try playin' it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer!
Two, four, six, eight,
Time to transubstantiate!

So get down upon your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
and genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Was original sin original? Well... that particular story about the talking snake telling a woman to eat an apple that her creator told her never to eat, and then getting her hubby to eat it too ... and then both being tossed out of the garden by their creator hasn't appeared anywhere but in the Judeo-Christian bible, so I guess it is pretty original. Punishing the snake by forcing it to crawl on its belly forevermore when it was designed without any legs in the first place is a pretty original idea, too. ;)
