If I was a pastor of a 501(c)3 church/corporation I would have a disclaimer before my sermons stating that my political opinion was my personal opinion and not the Opinion of this church/corp. - It should work as far as the IRS is concerned.

Also as a pastor I could have a real Church and say anything I want politically and have a 501(c)3 for donation for the poor and needy, just keep the two activities/names seperate. Pretty Cool.

The ONLY reason you would need a 501(c)3 exemption on file for a church auxilliary organization is if you wish to solicit other corporate entities for grants and other types of funding. Most of them require proof of that in your grant application package. Private individuals can still claim the deduction for donations if they wish because the church has a tax EXCEPTION under section 508 of the IRM. This is a HUGE difference because an exemption is a legislative grace granted to to an organization at its whim. Exception is something that legislation recognizes as being OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF THEIR AUTHORITY!!!!
