Is anyone else running a Unix(tm) like operating system?
I was just wondering what other members, besides my self, are running a Unix(tm) like operating system (Linux, *BSD, OS X, etc..) and so I figured I'd ask.
These systems have a vast array of tools and I think it might be helpful if other *nix admin, using this forum, were aware of one another.
Sincerely,
Christopher Theodore: Rhodes

I run Ubuntu Linux on my gaming station (dual boot Ubuntu and Windows).
I run Solaris 10, FreeBSD, and Gentoo in virtual machines within VMWare. It will be interesting dinking around with Xen for virtualizing OSes.
Linux is the sheesee =D!!!
Windows can't hold a candle to the *nixes in versatility, security, and customization.
The only reason I have Windows now is for gaming (Unreal Tournament 2004 nut here). As soon as Nvidia corrects their driver for this game, I'm out of Windows at least as far as guest OSes go for virtualization. I will run Windows, but only in a virtual machine image in VMWare or Xen on Linux.
I find it interesting that as I seek true freedom through the law, I'm moving away from the control of Windows to the freedom of Linux =D. I enjoy the parallel.

Hardcore BSD
I'm an old time BSD hippie. Semi-Retired from the IT industry after 22 years... AIX, HP/UX, Solaris, Linux (about 10 varients) and wonderful 'ole OS/X. I also have background in midrange and legacy systems such as AS/400 and VM.
The only "Wintel" I run in an XP/SP2 virtual machine running in an emulator on my OS/X G4 machine so I can fire up that occasional "windows only" software for a job or something.

Trooper...
Have you tried running Wine on OS/X?
I run Wine on Ubuntu. It works surprisingly well. I was able to run the Windows version of Unreal Tournament 2004 in Wine!!! It wasn't great, but it ran!
I use Wine to run Windows programs like uTorrent and Ares. I'm tempted to attempt an install of M$ Outlook in Wine. So far, everything I have ran in Wine works extremely well. I'll be able to run my Windows based portable apps in Wine which is totally awesome.
Yes, BSD is hardcore.
XD

netwrkranger;
Nice. I find windows has better apps for sound editing and art as well. Wine is a nice idea and has my blessing, but like you, I find it's just not up to par yet.
trooper2ls;
That's quite the resume. Nice to see an extremely knowledgeable system admin is a part of the sui juris community.
______________
My first distro was zipslack and then I ran Slackware for a couple of years.
Currently I am running FreeBSD and have been for about 7 years now (love ports), and the server is at: 63.226.12.96
2001:470:8110::1
2001:470:1f05:da::10
I host a few sites/domains if anyone cares to check them out http://63.226.12.96 but most are works in progress at the moment.
I was a member of the OpenNIC for quite a few years before the project founder (Robbin Bandy) and most of the main root server and TLD server admin ceased being involved. The democratic process and lack of organization really killed that project.
I am currently working on developing the alternative domain name system ( http://www.alt-dns.net).
Sincerely,
Christopher Theodore: Rhodes

Wow Aksis...
.. hardcore, man =D.
Windows has many good points. I imagine most individuals (who aren't zealots) would agree with the cliche, "the right tool for the job".
Wine has surpassed my expectations. I use it to run most Windows programs with absolutely no problems. Again, I was shocked Wine could run and play UT2004. It runs much smaller and less intensive programs beautifully.
I love Ubuntu =D.
From reading your post, Aksis, I am inspired to get back into web administration. I already have people bugging me for webpages, hosting, and administration.
I have to get my programming weight up though. I'm slowly moving away from network engineering and Active Directory architecture to programming.

Exactly the attitude I see having eclipsed the 'zealot mode' of a few years ago. Client Side | Server Side
Tho I use FreeBSD on my laptop as well. Not much of a gamer at the moment... not much time.

Been a while since I used wine, might be time to play with it again.

consider approaching your site like a gem stone. Each service being a facet (or even a few facets) and each in turn being cut and then polished... and polished more later.
Speaking ideally, I contemplate my server as an attribute of my individual autonomous sovereign state. Great tool for publishing stuff... and other purposes.

I started on Linux with RedHat 5 ...LOL. Long time ago.
I stumbled across FreeBSD somehow. That OS is a lot of fun. I am contemplating throwing Ubuntu on my Toshiba laptop.
For programming, I am doing quite a bit with C#. I started out with BASIC. College was heavy C++ for awhile.
I like Perl for quick and dirty or hardcore data and string parsing. I like the *nix tools and scripting languages period for data and string parsing i.e ed, ex, sed, awk, bash, bourne, regular expressions, tcl, etc.
I believe vim to be the cat's meow of text editors =D.
The terminator terminal window emulator is off the chain.
I'm a command-line freak, so don't mind me.
I have had to give up a lot of gaming, but it is always fun to go to LAN parties =D.

The best language when it comes to server side. When setup and used properly and wisely you can really make efficient use of the hardware capabilities of the machine without a bunch of overhead.
I wrote a web based application for IBM in perl that connected to a DB-II service for it's data and we were able to pass a 100K concurrent user test by their test labs on a little 2 processor G4 based RS6000 server running AIX. The connectivity routine I had written for Perl->DBII was a connection pool based module written in PPC assembly. The DB-II server was run on the same box as apache and the perl! Try that on a wintel box :(
Open source is the only way to travel. If you go OEM/ proprietary then you can get boxed in real quick. That is one cool thing about OS/X that many don't realize that the core operating system is open source. All of the tools are contained with every Mac for anyone to program anything they want. You just have to know where to start.
