seeking student loan advocate

Im seeking someone in the US who can act on my behalf. Having defaulted on a federal student loan in 1997 and been abused quite badly by an initial collector in 1999 I don't want to attempt direct negotiation with the current (new) collection agency myself. Nothing has been paid on the loan but it may have grown to an unmanageable figure by now. All I know is family members are being harrassed to disclose my contact details. Another reason I want independent advice is that I don't want to just accept a collector's version of the bottom line. Maybe there is a way of reducing the amount of charges and interest to take account of the long period of default caused partly by the early bad experience (I wrote citing FDCPA contraventions) and also the fact that since I no longer live in the US there seems to be little they can do except harrass me by way of inducing me to repay- which I do want to do.
