300% property tax increase

Ok all,

I need some quick suggestions. tonight I found out is a meeting on a proposal to raise property taxes by 300%. Not over a period of time but in one shot.
Our city counsil who were just elected last year are all for this.

I see thier reasoning, but it is flawed and thought out with minds of kindergarteners. "WE NEED MORE MONEY, LET JUST TAKE IT"

A breif of the towns current situation.
40yrs ago A company came in and in put in roads and infrastructure for a large boom they where expecting. It never happened.
Now in the last 5 years it has happened. Propery values have trippled in last 3 years. Lots the so called city could not sell for 100 FRNs 5 years ago are now 50,000 to 85,000 FRNs. We have went form a population 7,800 to 40,000 and are still only 10% populated.

I have not studied in this area at all and really do not have the time needed before the next meeting.

Any help or suggestions to temporarily halt this so it can be examined properly would be very helpful and or any questions I could ask on the floor (not argue or chastise) but real questions as to how or what power they have to impose this.
