Just asking, not instructing, sorry
How do you set up an in car camera which can record to a remote location via web ?
Would you need WiFi ?
What software?, etc . . .

There are several solution available online. I would, however, check out to see if a system that transmits via net or airwave can have that info entered into evidence.
MI law at least, forbids recording telephonic conversations to be used as evidence unless the party being recorded is first advised of the fact. Of course I am assuming that any form of transmission that falls under FCC jurisdiction would probably be treated the same way as a phone call. The prostitutor would move like the quickness to quash it! A system that doesnt transmit the audio/video but records it to a recorder in the vehicle wouldnt be subject to that. There would be no obligation to tell the pig that stopped you about it either.
Its pretty sad that we have to resort to electronic counter measures to protect ourselves and property against the cops!

To transmit to a remote location, you will need wimax, which isn't out yet.
The datastream is too large for publicly available resources, unless you are in an RV with constant satellite upload download, and then, you would need a high speed upload.
The best solution is to go with a DVR which is secured in a triple locked (custom made) steel enclosure with tubular key locks (which you do NOT carry on your body, but store them in a secure location, which prevents the cops from just unlocking your DVR storage.)
Of course, if you know radio technology and burst packaging, there may be a way to transmit bursts of data without being tracked. Dunno.

Lets start from the beginning.
Ovbiously you want to get a video record of things happening near your car.
First, why do you want to transmit it to a remote location via the web? Wouldn't a normal recorder in the car work just as well?
If you want to transmit it via the Internet, you are going to need (in the car) the camera, a computer, and some kind of communication device that is alway working.
WiFi isn't any good because it only works over very short distances. You'd have to be in a public hot spot to use it and, unless the compouter was set up to automatically scan and connect to hot spots, you'd have to sit there at the keyboard and do it yourself.
You really have a very limited number of choices of communications links. Remember, there has to be something at the other end of the link that's always awake, and is tied to the web.
The most widely available options you have are a PDA or a cell or satellite phone with internet capability. Even then, you'd have to either leave them dialed in all the time, (that's an awful lot of minutes per month) or make a new call every time you wanted to record something.
One other choice is an amatuer radio unit which will work but takes a lot of technical ability to set up properly.

I guess the locked up DVR is the way to go
I am looking for a good audio PLUS video feed
Is the DVR a way to digitally record lots of footage?
What equipment would I need?

If you trust "law enforcement," that's a dandy idea. I do not, and I suspect that the original poster does not. Thus, the desire to have the data in a secure (not compromised) location.

If you are referring to my post, the word is wimax, not wifi.
wifi is for stationary connection. wimax is mobile, and not yet fully deployed.

The data is too large for these transmitting utilities. I have already checked this out, and I am waiting for wimax.

catalog
I saw it recently in a catalog for $80. It is a motion picture recorder for the dashboard. It records to a SD card and will scroll that recording with a cigarette lighter or battery power supply.
Speaking for myself, I would put that chip in my camera, edit it down and then slip it into my Pocket PC and send it WiFi to transmit it via internet. That is not live. So I suppose the next best thing might be to consider ways to pull and hide the chip - replace it real fast, like that.
Otherwise, what Extramural said.
I want to get a hinge and rubber tube to glue to my cell phone and make it look like I am talking on a satellite phone - cool!
Regards,
David Merrill.

Before you criticise, you really should take a few seconds and read.
The WifI reference was in response to the original post, not to you.
Please don't hold your breath until WiMax shows up. The company proposing it is losing millions of dollars and just fired their CEO.

Thank you, I am naturally offensive, and don't even try.
Sprint has XOHM wimax coming out, and they are merged with Nextel.
They aren't going out of business any time soon, and they project Spring 2008.
But, you are correct, I shouldn't hold my breath until that time.

Sprint is in deep sh*t.
They are losing customers faster than they can count.
Unless they can find someone to dump a few million dollars into their operation, their dreams of WiMax will remain dreams.
They don't even have licenses for the spectrum to implement it.
