Bordered Posted Signs
I used to think the border around the street signs were just there for decorative purposes ...to make the sign stand out, and look good. There must be a underlying reason that those borders are there on the signs..... Usually there's a reason behind everything they do, and could the "box" you are "requested" to sign inside of on one of those "offers/drafts", "bills", "Notice to Appear", citations that the "blue coats" freely give you, have any relationship to the box/border around the writing on the signs?
It appears that whats "in the box" is important and and everything else is extrinsic.
Anybody have insight to the significance?
If there is, maybe we should be putting our stuff in a bordered letter when we have dealings too!

Think outside/inside the box...
When I sign anything I am asked to sign, I put a box around all of my disclaimers, and autograph.
Good post.

Hmmmmm! I wonder what putting a box around your signature on a Form 1040 (if those are still being used) would stir up?

It's already in a box, the thing is, it's in a box with the perjury statement.
The deal would be to draw a box around the signature not including the verbage. (If you are so inclined to sign a 1040).
Then, get a notary to do a certified copy.

summergarden,
Welcome to the forum !
There was some discussion on SJ, several months ago about the "Law of Boxing" and how it relates to street signs, ect...
Allegedly, whatever is in the 'box' is merely a suggestion, and can be ignored. ie... street signs are for commercial vehicles only, and private modes can ignore the 'boxed signs' altogether... It's my understanding, this is also the reason for putting brackets around the zip code, on your address, so as not to imply you 'reside' in a 'federal district'.
Unfortunately, I don't recall anyone providing a source for this theory/maxim.. despite it's prevalence...

WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Might be quite informative to study a "Certificate of Live Birth", US Passport application and a UCC FS and pay careful attention to what is in a box or not.
Consider notary seals and whether they are in boxes are not.
Whether something is in a box or outside a box appears to have great signifnance. Whether something is in red ink, blue ink, or black ink, or purple ink, green ink, gold ink or other colored ink appears to have some significance as well.

advisement
For a long while I was advising to simply strikethrough the contract within the signature box on a Uniform Summons and Complaint (traffic ticket) before signing. They always slip a promise to appear into that box.

David Merrill.

I am straining memory here... something about a Government Forms Handbook. That parinthesis, brackets and boxes contain only explanatory or superfluous material. However like above in my post, the entire contract is in the box with the signature - a contract. The other boxes explain the charge, the courthouse address and what date you promised to appear in the signature box.
I remember hearing about the manual from Randy Lee and John W. Saunders (actor John Quade) many years ago.

Can't manage to find any border encompassing the entire citation I'm looking at issued by LAPD.... just lines. Only box outstanding is the one which says inside in all caps WITHOUT ADMITTING GUILT, I PROMISE TO APPEAR AT THIS TIME AND PLACE INDICATED BELOW. The below has list of WHEN, WHAT TO DO, WHERE, with little boxes to check off next to locations, which strangely are printed in proper upper and lower case letters. I have a United States Government Printing Office (1984 )Style Manual, where at Section 3.1 it tells you that proper names are capitalized, showing the first letter capitalized and the remaining letters, lower case.
Well I just ran to get the book, and looked in the index.... nothing about boxes there..but.... there is something on brackets on page 119, Section 8.20 that says " In transcripts, congressional hearings, testimony in courtwork, etc., to enclose [my emphasis...'interpolations' ], explanations, omissions, editorial comments, or a caution that an error is reproduced literally. And it gives some examples.
Now, from that great word "interpolate", Webster's says, its to "polish", "dress up" "corrupt""altered by refurbishing" "repaired" "altered" "enlarged" "by putting in new words subject matter".
So I guess that what's in the box can be concluded as being interpolated matter. And what is the lawful effect of something being altered, enlarged and polished up.. in an allegedly legal document?
By the way...for anyone with a citation that says its been approved by the Judicial Council...go to the law library and check to see if the Form number is actually listed on the approved list. There is a set of books that are the Judicial Council Forms. I have TR 110 on mine, and a friend who got one has TR 130..Guess What! NOT ON LIST!!!
Thanks to everyone for your replies...this is great fun!

By the way David Merrill... you mention the name Randy Lee above, and I was wondering if you know him? Years ago I went to the Jural Society meetings in the S.F. Valley in Calif., that were held across from the Studio's in 1992-93.. still have the book he and John Joseph wrote "Book Of The Hundreds". Unfortunately they lost the use of the facilities and then it just kind of fell apart. But I can remember hearing that he went to court with the California Republic Flag and a Bible. If I'm not mistaken it was an IRS issue. My understanding is that he told the Judge.... This is my flag, and showed the bible and said... this is my law.... and the judge said to the agent... Well, do you have anything to say.....That was the end of it.

Here's the " Randy Lee beats the IRS" page... Lots of great stuff on the CLA site...
I had a win in superior court, using a modified version of his opening, along with common law default docs. (link here)
