AnnaMarie,
Make sure your house is in good financial order before you jump in. You need to own nothing they might take or own everything you need to survive(no payments).
CC "debt" is a good place to learn and start. A simple traffic ticket is another good place to start.
I started with the IRS and that was a big one to battle with. I don't regret it, but wish I had studied a bit more! Then again, if it weren't for the weird twists along the way, I may not have been driven to study so hard in the many other areas. We all have roots somewhere which got us picking at that splinter in our brains. Then we got friends(often the internet) who helped us define the splinter and use the right extraction tools.
My quest began with a Irwin Schiff's classic book, "Why no one is required to pay income tax" I found for a buck at Salvation Army! From there my first Internet "support group" was the Truthseekers Network" with Jason Whitney at the helm trying new stuff to see what would happen. Now this forum is a wealth of info and supporting friends too!
Make sure you understand the basics. Amazingly, you study tons of details to discover the basics are right in front of you. Stick with those and don't get sidetracked into arguing details.
One credit card at a time to get it figured out.
