In addition to your browser...
I doubt this is a cause, but I will make this proposal anyways.
There is a package available on the web called the K-Lite Mega Codec Pak. It installs just about all the codecs that your computer would need to play any video or audio media.
If you would like to explore other media players, besides Windows Media Player, there is VLC, Winamp, Media Player Classic, and many more. I must be honest and say that I use Windows Media Player coupled with the K-Lite Mega Codec Pak, but I do have all those mentioned above and more for backup and experimentation. If you are uncertain about installing programs, both VLC and Media Player Classic are portable applications (love portable apps). There is also a portable Winamp.
Also, I wonder if Comcast is doing any packet shaving/shaping on your line? That could be interfering with streams and downloads if done on the wire.
Finally, one could sweep their machines for viruses and spyware/adware to see if they are taking up clock cycles and/or bandwidth. I prefer the following applications for these purposes: AVG Antivirus, Spybot, and Ad-Aware.
For simplicity, a reboot can do wonders for an ailing machine.
All applications and programs mentioned above are free.
