USC = United States Code, the official edition (beginning in 1924) has been published by the US Govt Printing Office every six years (latest is 2006 edition), with annual supplements of new legislation in-between. Unfortunately the volumes tend to be published about two years after their cover dates. The USC presents in logical, rather than chronological, arrangement the current US law of general and lasting application. Occasionally Congress enacts one of its titles as "positive law" - meaning that Congress enacts in one huge bill the entire text of all the sections of the title, so the wording of the title is the exact wording used in the Act(s) of Congress. Titles not yet enacted as positive law were and are edited by the House Legislative Revision Counsel, and are "prima facie law" - meaning the text of the USC title is presumed correct unless and until someone shows that a provision somehow fails to accurately reproduce the words of the statute. The USC includes historical notes for each section, briefly describing how the section has been amended over the years; sometimes these official notes include relevant portions of individual statutes - in alphabetical order according to the short title of the statute, Presidential Proclamations, and Executive Orders.
USCA = United States Code Annotated, a commercial edition of the USC, published by West Publishing (now part of Thomson-West). It contains the exact text of the USC plus casenotes, cross-references, citations of law reviews, and other helps. Individual volumes are replaced as the occasion warrants and the set is updated with annual updates and quarterly supplements, keeping it updated to within the last six months.
USCS = United States Code Service, another commercial edition of the USC, this one originally published by the Lawyers cooperative Publishing Co. (now part of Lexis Publishing). It contains the exact text of the USC -- but for those titles not yet enacted as positive law, it also contains (in brackets) the wording of the original statutes where these were changed in editing the USC. It has its own collection of casenotes, cross-references, etc. and is, like the USCA, updated with annual pocket parts and quarterly supplements, with volumens occasionally replaced as the occasion warrants. The historical notes repeat the contents of the USC's official notes but in chronological rather than alphabetic order.
